Program correct data settings for non-AT&T devices

Learn how to program your device with the correct APN and MMS data connection settings to use 4G (HSPA+)/4G LTE data services.

STEP-BY-STEP

How to program AT&T data settings

A compatible, non-AT&T device, like an unlocked device from another carrier or a device purchased directly from the manufacturer, requires the following to use AT&T 4G (HSPA+) or 4G LTE data services:

  • A compatible SIM card
  • A compatible data plan
  • Correct AT&T APN & MMS data settings

Verify the device has a compatible SIM card and data plan before changing the data settings. This may resolve data connection issues without requiring any changes to your data settings.

Verify compatible SIM card

You should already have the correct type SIM card if you recently purchased it new from AT&T or an authorized retailer. If you are using a SIM card from some other source or if you moved an active SIM card to a new device, check the SIM number to make sure it is compatible. Learn how to verify SIM compatibility with 4G (HSPA+)/4G LTE data.

Verify compatible data plan
If you moved an active SIM card to a new device and did not notify us of that change, your existing data plan might not be compatible. To update the device information on the account and make any required rate plan changes, the account holder or authorized user can:

  • Chat with us using the Chat button when available (not available for GoPhone).
  • Call 611 from an AT&T wireless phone.
  • Call 800.331.0500 (GoPhone customers call 800.901.9878).

Main steps

To use data services on our network with a non-AT&T device, you may need to program the data settings. The sections below provide the correct settings and steps for programming based on your device type and operating system.

Program Android device data settings

Some older Android smartphones may use the wap.cingular APN as the default AT&T setting. This APN no longer supports smartphone data connectivity. To program the device with the new settings to connect to data services:

  1. Access the Settings menu.
  2. Locate and select Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
  3. Select Mobile Networks.
  4. Select Access Point Names.
  5. Locate and select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a +symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
  6. Program each field using the settings below.
  7. Save the changes to return to the APNs menu and select the new APN.
